Kicking off the celebrations was Guest-of-Honour, Mr Wee Heng Tin, Director-General of Education, who delivered a short speech in which he wished teachers present a "Happy Teachers’ Day", and acknowledged the contribution of the non-teaching staff as well.

Teachers joined in unison for the Tachers' Pledge.

In a symbolic moment, Mr Wee, with right fist across his chest, then led those present in reciting the Teachers’ Pledge. Mr Wee then proceeded to cut a large cake with the words "Happy Teachers’ Day" across it. He was joined by Mr Lim Siong Guan, Permanent Secretary, Education and Mr Chiang Chie Foo, 2nd Permanent Secretary, Education, in the cake cutting. The ceremony over, all guests enjoyed the sumptuous buffet spread.
