| On 21 February 2004, Anglo-Chinese
Junior College (ACJC) welcomed close to 10,000 visitors to its
Fun-O-Rama, a fundraising food-and-fun fair. This biennial event
has been a well-loved tradition of the college since it moved
to its current campus in 1978. It is an occasion for students,
staff, parents and alumni to come together and work to raise
funds for the running of college programmes and the upgrading
of college facilities. |

ACJC’S
FUN-O-RAMA allows students to develop and showcase
their enterprising spirit. Students conceptualise their products,
conduct market research on the viability of their concepts,
learn about competitive pricing, and develop marketing skills
during the course of the fair.

Students devised a wide range of very creative games, some involving
quite complex electronic and mechanical designs which required
them to put into practice some of the theory learnt in class.
The food stalls impressed with their extensive variety and amusing
walking advertisements. The Parents’ Action Team also came in
full force to set up a café which served an amazing array of
food, including popiah, chin chow, bratwurst hotdogs
and pasta.
Preparation for the Fun-O-Rama began late last year. Students
and teachers started planning for and raising capital to fund
their proposed food and games stalls. In the two months leading
up to the fair, students went all out to advertise their products
to the school. Their creative marketing strategies included
multimedia presentations, humorous cross-talks and poetic compositions.
In the last week, everyone worked long hours to transform the
College into a colourful fair ground for the event.

This year’s Fun-O-Rama also commemorated ACJC’s partnership
with the Economic Development Board of Singapore (EDB). Mr Evan
Ng, Assistant Head of EDB’s Technopreneurship and Venture Capital
Department, Enterprise Ecosystem Development Division, was present
to launch the ACJC-EDB Entrepreneurship Education Programme,
fondly known as EntréE.
The EntréE programme is designed to nurture strong entrepreneurial
instincts in the students. It formalises the entrepreneurial
experience offered by Fun-O-Rama, which provides the first level
of experiential learning. The Fun- O-Rama experience helps students
to learn the essential skills of teamwork and collaboration.
It also allows students to exercise their leadership skills
in the organisation and execution of their plans.
As part of the programme, selected students will be further
exposed to business concepts and practices via workshops and
seminars, gaining valuable hands-on business experience in the
form of work attachments and opportunities to develop their
own business plans. EDB’s partnership will provide students
with the expertise of local entrepreneurs, who will act as mentors
to students selected for this programme.
The event was a big success and visitors were impressed with
the level of commitment and professionalism of all involved
on that memorable day. Contributed
