THE TRIM AND FIT AND MINDEF PHYSICAL FITNESS
PERFORMANCE AWARDS 2001

1      The Trim and Fit (TAF) Programme was implemented in 1992 in support of the National Healthy Lifestyle Campaign. The objectives are to reduce obesity and improve physical fitness among students. Since its inception, the programme has helped to raise the awareness of students, teachers and parents on the importance and principles of healthy living.

2       The TAF awards are presented annually to schools. Each year, schools are banded according to their fitness index, physical fitness test results and percentage of overweight students. The TAF banding criteria are given in Annex 1. Schools in Band A will receive the Gold Award while schools in Band B will receive the Silver Award.

3      In 2001, a total of 116 and 177 schools qualified for the Gold and Silver Awards respectively (see Annex 2). There is an increase of 14 schools receiving the Gold Award, from 102 schools in year 2000. Annex 3 lists the schools receiving the Gold and Silver Awards.

4      The Ministry of Defence will be presenting the revised MINDEF Physical Fitness Performance Award (MPFPA) to junior colleges (JCs) and centralised institutes (CIs) to recognise their efforts in promoting physical fitness.

5      Prior to the revision, the MPFPA was a lump sum award that only considered the physical fitness levels of male students. This year, the MPFPA takes into consideration the physical fitness levels of both male and female students. The amount of the monetary award is determined based on the number of students who achieve a Silver or Gold standard for the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA).

6      The MPFPA comprises 3 categories:

a.     Best Performer Award. This is given to the institution that achieves the highest percentage of NAPFA Silver/Gold awards.

b.     Merit Award. This is given to institutions that achieve the target percentage of NAPFA Silver/Gold awards.

c.     Most Improved Award. This is given to the institution with the greatest improvement in the percentage of NAPFA Silver/Gold awards.

7      This year, a total of 13 institutions will be presented the MPFPA. Jurong Junior College will receive the Best Performer Award and Jurong Institute will receive the Most Improved Award. The Merit Award will be presented to Victoria JC, Nanyang JC, National JC, Tampines JC, Hwa Chong JC, Raffles JC, Anglo-Chinese JC, Catholic JC, Serangoon JC, Anderson JC, Temasek JC and Jurong Institute.

2.

To be placed in a particular Band, a school must meet the criteria set for all three categories. For the fitness index and physical fitness pass rate, a school must attain or exceed the percentages set for the respective Band. However, for the overweight percentage, the school must not exceed the percentage set for the respective Band.

3.

For example, to be placed in Band A, a primary school must attain or exceed 84% and 77% set for the fitness index and physical fitness test pass rate respectively, but for the overweight percentage, it should not exceed 9%.
