DPM Tan to visit US universities in New York, Philadelphia and
North Carolina
DPM and Minister for Defence Dr Tony Tan will be leading a delegation
to visit U.S. universities from 21 - 30 April 2002. The purpose of his visit is to gather
insights from the experiences of US universities for the on-going review of Singapore's
university sector. In particular, the visit aims to gain new perspectives to addressing
the issue of how additional capacity can be provided to allow more Singaporeans to pursue
university education.
DPM Tan will be meeting representatives from various U.S. institutions,
including Cornell University, Drexel University, Duke University and the University of
North Carolina (including 2 of its 16 campuses, at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State
University at Raleigh).
In North Carolina, DPM Tan will be calling on the Governor of North
Carolina, Governor Michael F. Easley, as well as visiting the North Carolina Research
Triangle Park.
DPM Tan will also be meeting the Singaporean Overseas Network (SON) at
Boston to gather views and inputs for the on-going Economic Review Committee's
deliberations.
DPM Tan's delegation includes Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minster Of State for
Education and Manpower (who chairs the inter-Ministry committee for the review of the
university sector), and officials from MOE, MOM, EDB and NUS.
