Innovating With Technologies - Creating The Borderless Classroom

Two key projects which illustrate innovative ways of using information technology for teaching and learning, will be featured in "Innovating with Technologies - Creating the Borderless Classroom" organized by the Ministry of Education on 25 April 2002. Director-General of Education, Mr. Wee Heng Tin, will officiate the event at the MOE Edutorium at 2.30 pm.

The emphasis placed on inter-disciplinary research and innovative use of information technology in these projects, support MOE's goals for education, and its vision of Thinking Schools Learning Nation. Students apply and transfer knowledge to real world situations, with the aim of benefiting the community. At the same time, they expand their research laboratories to include the external environment, and benefit from the borderless classroom concept. Both projects support the national emphasis on Life Sciences research and development and the goals of the IT Masterplan in promoting innovation and collaboration.

The first project entitled "Mesocyclops as a Biological Control Agent " is an innovative interdisciplinary project where students and teachers explored the possibility of using Mesocyclops, a Copepod to control the breeding of the Aedes mosquitoes. This project was supported by the MOE Innovation fund, and was jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of the Environment. Research findings of the project may help provide a solution to reduce the incidence of dengue in Singapore.

The second project, Sea@venture Learning Series, challenges the traditional delivery of content. Students from ten schools will have the opportunity to participate in "live" science lessons and enjoy learning experiences outside the confines of the classroom. Five interactive underwater explorations will be transmitted live from remote locations around Singapore waters, and streamed into schools through broadband webcasting. Selected students can interact with field experts in real time via chatroom and phone. They will also be able to participate in online activities after each webcasting episode. Working with MOE on this learning series is Star Waves.TV Pte Ltd.
